Our Disability Service has built on our strengths as an inclusive university and we are recruiting inspirational and dynamic staff to work within our disability team.
Role
To provide individual study skills support for disabled students, particularly those with a Specific Learning Difference (SpLD) and Autism (ASC); the level and type of support will vary according to the individual student. Tutors provide support that will assist students to develop organisational skills and manage their time and workload effectively as well as other study skills. Support provided will help students to develop as independent learners and maintain the necessary focus on academic progress despite the challenges faced because of their disability. Tutors provide support both face to face and via real time remote methods of delivery (Teams). 1:1 support will be provided for a minimum of 25 hours a week for our DSA funded students.
As a permanent member of the Disability Advice and Support Team, you will also be responsible for supporting the service with additional duties including supporting the management team to develop the service provision by delivering small group sessions to students as well as creating and delivering relevant workshops to students. You will be creating content for student Padlets to further support them. As part of the role you will be speaking to students when they have missed sessions to encourage to re-engagement. You will be working on new and innovative ways to engage our students and support our students though various projects.
You will develop positive relationships with teams within and external to the university, to uphold our excellent reputation for supporting disabled students, taking a proactive approach in ensuring that disabled applicants and their families are aware of our services available.
You will be providing support to external study skills tutors who work through Unitemps as part of a Buddy system.
Ideal Candidate
Candidates will preferably have recent and relevant experience of supporting adults who have a Specific Learning Difference in the Higher Education environment, supporting students become familiar with University procedures and the range of support mechanisms that are available to them and to provide them with support to access these.
You will be proactive and flexible in your approach, have excellent interpersonal skills, and possess the ability to prioritise your workload.
It is essential that the successful candidate hold a professionally accredited approved SpLD teaching qualification, as well as the professional body membership outlined in the DfE mandatory qualification criteria for the role of Specialist one-to-one Study Skills and Strategy Support – Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) and the role of Specialist one-to-one Study Skills and Strategy Support Autism (ASC), which can be found here:
