MECHANICAL DESIGN/PROJECT ENGINEER,
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the role is to Design, Project Manage and oversee specific requirements that deliver new build technical information to allows the manufacture, assembly, commissioning and after sales support of high quality bespoke vehicle builds used for moving, storing, expelling liquids and semi solids in the tanker building, jetting, drainage and welfare industry.
The Mechanical Design/Project Engineer will take direction and instruction from the Directors and assume responsibility for the timely delivery of effective, functional and innovative product design solutions to the business
To emphasise the experience required, GK & N products and systems are all low-volume and uniquely designed to customer requirements, rather than standard high-volume catalogue products.
Key Responsibilities
Design and deliver conceptual mechanical vehicle builds, systems and schematics utilising either 2D AutoCAD or 3D Solid Works software.
Managing, co-ordinating and delivering technically challenging design projects from conception through to delivery of finished vehicle builds, within budget on schedule and to the desired quality and in accordance with business and customer constraints.
Work closely with all departments to ensure products are designed for manufacture.
Scheduling of design tasks to maximise manufacturing output, maintain efficiencies and reduce costs, in accordance with multiple project schedules.
Identify and implement continuous process improvements to optimise design and manufacturing efficiencies, ensuring high quality components are produced with minimum waste
Management and verification of all drawings, revisions and BOM’s to support purchasing, engineering and manufacturing functions.
Interpret business and customers engineering standards and be adaptable to apply these standards to customer specific designs if required.
Provide confidence in commercial awareness to ensure design and manufacturing solutions are managed and delivered in a cost-effective manner project changes are managed and captured in accordance with standard, revision operation procedures.
Ensure schedules are understood and workload in the design and manufacturing departments are managed to meet the business priorities and objectives.
Ensure all project technical data and information is captured and input into the company’s management system.
From the project technical data manage and compile the data into the standard technical file and instruction manuals for customer handover manuals.
Ensure there is a robust filing structure in place and all file management is adhered to.
Undertake and review mechanical design & design risk assessments to meet all legislative, business and customers requirements and standards.
Ensure appropriate targets and time scales are monitored reported on and achieved in line with Business requirements.
Working in collaboration with purchasing and other departments to facilitate the delivery of projects, within budget on schedule and to the desired quality and in accordance with design constraints.
Scrutinise all information regarding internal manufacturing requirements to allow efficiencies of Design purchasing and manufacture.
Interpret and adhere to engineering drawing standards and be able to apply these standards to customer specific requirements and communicate these standards through to all team members.
Take ownership of projects to progress them and use initiative to rationalise decisions when support from others is not available
Ensure schedules are understood and workload is managed to meet the business priorities and objectives.
Manage Design quality work checks to ensure the information required meets quality standards and are aligned with company quality procedures.
Courteous and informative interaction with subordinates and other departments to provide technical support and information when required.
Key Skills & Experience
Excellent leadership and management skills and being equipped with strong and effective communication, interpersonal & listening skills
Be competent (and confident) in all technical aspects of mechanical design and development of special purpose machinery (ideally gained within a similar industry or environment).
Ability design and deliver concise engineering drawings and ensure implementation according to tolerances, finish, and weld specification.
Excellent time management and organisational skills, being able to prioritise requirements to meet differing demands.
Possess a good understanding of the principles of mechanical engineering practice gained within a similar manufacturing environment.
Experience in delivering solutions to technical issues.
The desire to deliver a high level of quality and customer service and encourage others.
Experience of technical projects including working to tight timescales and meeting project milestones throughout the project life cycle.
A supportive and encouraging approach to mentoring and developing less experienced members of the team.
