Hackney Education provides a range of services to support the education of children, young people and adults in our inner London borough. Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. Within our diverse borough we serve a wide range of children and young people. We have a particular focus on supporting less advantaged families: Hackney figures in the 10% most deprived boroughs in England on a number of measures.
Hackney Education’s key priority is to improve the life chances of every child, young person and learner: making Hackney the most forward looking education system in the UK, where schools, settings and partners provide an exciting environment which ensures inclusion and success for everyone. We see our borough as being one of the best places in the country for young people to grow, learn, develop and achieve –and one of the best places for colleagues to work and thrive in our education system.
Can you help us support schools in Hackney in raising the achievement, engagement, celebration and representation of Black Caribbean and African pupils in our local system?
Black British History plays a powerful role in helping pupils see themselves and their heritage in their school’s curriculum, and, therefore, in being prepared for life in modern Britain.
We are looking to recruit an experienced subject leader to support us in the next phase of developing The Hackney Diverse Curriculum: The Black Curriculum. This initiative, supported by the Council, aims to make the local education system more inclusive and respectful of racial and cultural diversity, identity and heritage.
The role will focus on improving opportunities for schools to deliver learning experiences that represent, celebrate and promote a sense of belonging and identity for Black Caribbean, Black African and global majority heritage pupils. It means threading diversity and inclusion throughout each setting’s curriculum offer.
The work will entail planning and designing programmes of study and associated teaching materials; preparing and delivering well focused meetings/discussion forums on determining content and pedagogy; training and professional development to serving practitioners.
You will work with Hackney Education and the Council in formulating the development of an aspirational, commercial and curriculum model. In the first instance, it is expected that this might range from 20 to 30 days across a school year.
You will build positive professional relationships with senior and middle leaders in schools, uphold Hackney Council’s values, its commitment to diversity and inclusion and, in particular, to developing anti-racist education.
The candidate will keep abreast of subject-based research, developments and legislation. Attend and contribute to meetings, focusing at all times, on highest outcomes for all pupils.
Interviews: w/c 16th January 2023
This role will be 20 days per year.

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.
Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people and people from a black and ethnic minority background as these groups are currently under represented in our workforce.
