Based on the laboratory of Dr Christos Pliotas at the University of Manchester, you will work on an exciting project on dynamics and catalysis of integral membrane pyrophosphatases, aiming to determine how they pump both sodium ions and protons, to determine the mechanism (alternating or both ions pumped through a single chain at once) of this and of gate opening, and to use this as the basis for drug design. The project combines protein production and purification, subcellular trafficking and electrophysiological measurements to determine the molecular pathways as well as the structure of this challenging system.
You will be a highly motivated individual with a strong basis in cellular and structural biology, and experience in working with integral membrane proteins. You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a closely allied discipline and have previous experience in cloning, eukaryotic tissue culture, membrane protein expression and purification and/or electrophysiology. Experience in lipid assays and structural biology would be desirable.
